THE
IMMACULATE CONCEPTION PHOTOGRAPHY GALLERY
short
stories
(new edition to be published March 2000 by Vintage Canada)
From the author of the well-loved FABLES OF BRUNSWICK AVENUE, another
collection of short stories which enlarges and deepens Katherine
Govier's literary terrain. The title story, a prize winner in the
CBC Literary Contest, deftly evokes the moral dilemmas of a photographer
in Toronto's Little Italy who erases an errant bridesmaid from the
wedding photos. In "Aliens", what appears to be a U.F.O.
lands among the islands of Georgian Bay, while the women occupy
family cottages.
In "The
Picnic", an overwrought father in a speedboat on the Niagara
River takes his wife and child to the brink of the falls. Motherhood,
whether metaphorical or otherwise, ties these stories together in
a collection which is fierce, ironic, magical and very much Govier.
